Sermon in 100secs
Long before Jesus, King Solomon son of King David, After
making a sacrifice to God is asked in a dream what he wanted God to grant him.
He chose wisdom and God was pleased because he hadn’t asked for wealth, power
or long life. You see he chose wisdom because it would benefit others rather
than just himself.
Knowledge is knowing that a tomato is a fruit but wisdom is
not putting it in a fruit salad.
Wisdom is taking that knowledge we have and using it well,
making right choices.
There’s a world of knowledge at our fingertips these days but
people seem to not want to know the truth or get led astray by those who feed
them lies.
In the first
of his proverbs Solomon personified wisdom as something living, a
woman calling out to people, indeed shouting on the street
corners. Wisdom, she is baffled by people seeming to hate knowledge. She asks
them in the proverb, “you have knowledge but you refuse my counsel,
you know what the lord requires and yet you keep it to yourself even though I call
you to live what you know!”
It’s all
well and good knowing that Jesus came to save ALL but when we sit on that
knowledge or worse add to it with caveats and addendums, diminishing that ALL
to Some, then it is not God’s love we think we know. We know from the lips of
Jesus that God loves and wants to save ALL.
We are called by wisdom to act on that knowledge and change the world.
Pocket prayer
Awesome God, knowledge pours forth from you live rolling
rivers and wisdom grows like mighty oaks in your presence.
It seems these days that the world is filled with so much
knowledge and so little wisdom. So much information but people resisting the
truth in favour of what is easy. Not measuring what we receive, see, hear and
know with love, sense and truth but against what fits our story.
But your wisdom calls to us, she sings in the streets, her
voice is heard high above the market places, in the busiest corners of the
internet she calls out, at the gates of our lives she speaks!
How much longer? She says. How much longer will you refuse?
Delighting in your own laughter and foolishness? Why do you hate knowledge and
why do you refuse my direction?
She says “Hear me, listen to my teachings, take on my
thoughts and let God guide you into righteousness!”
We know that the planet is sick and God gave it to us to
care for. Help us hear your wisdom Lord as she tells us what we can do to heal
it.
We know that our neighbours are hurting and God calls us to
love our neighbour. Help us hear your wisdom Lord as she tells us what we can
do to comfort them.
We know that the poor are struggling and God tells us to give
to them. Help us hear your wisdom Lord as she tells us what we can do help
them.
We know that people are abused and silenced, God speaks to
us to speak for them. Help us hear your wisdom Lord as she shows us how to
hear.
In the name of the fount of wisdom, the wellspring of grace,
Jesus Christ we pray.
Amen
