John 18:37New Revised Standard Version, Anglicised
37 Pilate asked him, ‘So you are a king?’ Jesus answered, ‘You say that I am a king. For this I was born, and for this I came into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone who belongs to the truth listens to my voice.’
Ioan 18:37Beibl William Morgan
37 Yna y dywedodd Peilat wrtho, Wrth hynny ai Brenin wyt ti? Yr Iesu a atebodd, Yr ydwyt ti yn dywedyd mai Brenin wyf fi. Er mwyn hyn y’m ganed, ac er mwyn hyn y deuthum i’r byd, fel y tystiolaethwn i’r gwirionedd. Pob un a’r sydd o’r gwirionedd, sydd yn gwrando fy lleferydd i.
S100 King
It is that time of year when parents are besieged by
children telling them what they want for Christmas. When my three were much
younger I used to go to great lengths to ensure that they all got gifts of the
same value, the same number of boxes to open. I did not what any of them to
feel that they were missing out. As a kid I had a real fear of missing out, I
was obsessed with fairness. I didn’t want my brother to get something if I didn’t.
Strangely that fairness in my mind was one-sided.
In the days of the prophet Samuel the people were badgering
him and God to give them a king, they wanted what everyone else had. They
feared missing out. Samuel tried to warn them what earthly kings were like. They’ll
send your sons into their wars, take your harvests, your daughters will serve
them. They wouldn’t listen, afraid of missing out, being different. The Kings
they ended up with were just as Samuel said, even king David and his son
Solomon, while good still took more than they gave.
Despite asking for a king so they wouldn’t be different the
line of David eventually brought them a king very different. Jesus. King Jesus
is very different, inviting the children of his kingdom to be peace makers, to
be servants to the needy, gives blessings to his people and calls us to join
him in the harvest.
With Jesus as our king we are citizens of God’s kingdom, not
fearing missing out because it’s not about gain but about giving.
Pocket Prayer King
Lord Jesus Christ, creating Word. There in and before the
beginning, the Word with God and the Word as God. Speaking all things into
creation.
Every atom vibrates with your voice, each particle singing
your praises.
All creation announcing in one voice, Christ is King!
Here we are, amazingly, unexpectedly in the presence of
Christ the King.
We can but ponder how we came to be here, how we could
deserve your grace, it is too much for our words. We cannot lift our eyes to
look at you, we feel unworthy to be before you.
Yet you bid us each, come, draw nearer.
In spite of our sin, our wrongs, you have opened the gates
of your Kingdom. Called us and others Welcomed and ask us to step even closer.
As we move towards your throne, have mercy on us we pray.
Forgive us for when we have sought to sit on the throne of
our own lives, when we have sought personal security over justice, when we have
prayed in adoration, but our actions have not striven for peace, when we have
been thankful for our blessings but have refused to share them.
Lord have mercy, we pray.
Help us put aside our fear and hear your voice telling us we
are forgiven.
Loving Lord, you bid us look on your glory and we are
amazed, overwhelmed.
Rejoicing stirs in our hearts that you would love even ones
such as us, and that you call us each to your kingdom, call each of us, home.
Amen
